February unusual holidays and observances arenÂ’t always celebrated but can be fun to learn about. Have you heard of National Freedom Day, Mardi Gras or Boy Scouts Day? Read this article to learn more about unusual February holidays.

February unusual holidays and observances aren’t always celebrated but are often fun to learn about. Sure, we all know about the major ones that aren’t so unique. Everyone has heard about Valentine’s Day and President’s Day. Most of us have heard about Mardi Gras and even Fat Tuesday.

But there are some holidays in this month that many of us have never heard about and aren’t familiar with. Don’t believe me? Check out this list of February unusual holidays and observances.

National Freedom Day – It was on February 1, 1865 that President Lincoln signed legislation that would abolish slavery. According to it became a nationally recognized holiday in 1942.

®National Wear Red Day is a registered trademark of Health and Human Services and the American Heart Association. This day is a February unusual holiday and observance that’s celebrated annually.

The idea behind Wear Red Day is to promote awareness of heart disease in women. Ladies across the United States are encouraged to wear a red shirt, dress or lapel ribbon in honor of the cause.

Campaign resources and an online tool kit can be downloaded from the National Institutes of Health to help you raise awareness.

Who can forget Boy Scout Day on February 8? The Boy Scouts program has been around for just over 100 years! This February unusual holiday and observance has been set aside to honor scouting. What a great way to pay tribute and honor both the scouts and leaders than by setting aside this special day?

February 14th isn’t just Valentine’s Day. It’s the Chinese New Year. Chinese restaurants will almost always have special events to recognize this holiday. Inquire at your favorite restaurant ahead of time. The restaurant may be so busy on the Chinese New Year that your family or group may need to make advance reservations.

Mardi Gras is celebrated throughout most of the month of February but no date is more popular than the night before Ash Wednesday. It’s commonly known as Fat Tuesday and is the last celebration before the more somber time period of Lent. The date varies annually but is always the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Occasionally Fat Tuesday will be celebrated in March.

Ash Wednesday is often in February but not always. It marks the beginning of Lent. The Christian tradition of Lent is solemn time of prayer and repentance. With the exception of Sundays, recognition of this season also includes variations of fasting from food or activities beginning on Ash Wednesday and continuing through Lent.

These are just a few of the fun February unusual holidays and observances to be celebrated throughout the month.
